Building a Book Case Around Plantation Shutters

Today we’re going to be looking at “Building a Book Case Around Plantation Shutters”

Plantation shutters give a window great privacy and give the room a rich classy feel. There is no need for curtains or other blinds, because the shutters are a permanent window covering that only require occasional cleaning with a damp cloth. Often the shutters alone help to dress up the room without the addition of anything else, but sometimes the window needs an extra something and this video will cover one such idea.

Book Case Area

Since shutters can be opened by turning the louvres, or by swinging open from the side, you do not have to worry about the space surrounding the window. A clever idea is to create a book case with the window in the middle. Start by either hand crafting this or by purchasing 2 such book cases. Make sure to match the colour and texture (as close as possible) of the plantation shutters, that way they will blend together well.

Materials Needed

Slats of wood (boards) cut to the length and width of the book case shelves, brackets and screws. Or a pre-made bookcase, one for each side of the window. Paint or stain to match the plantation shutters. A screwdriver and a level are handy too. Have the lumber yard cut the boards to the measurements you want for your shelves.

What to Do

With a tape measure, measure how far apart you want the book case shelves, then with a pencil “frame” around the plantation shutters and window. Look for the studs in which to screw the brackets so the shelves will be sturdy. With the level, make sure each shelf is level and straight across the top. If using pre-made book cases, be sure to screw them to the wall into a stud to secure them in place. Paint or stain the shelves to match the shutters.

If desired, place a board across the top to meet with the tops of each book case on either side of the window. This makes a great area to place items. Once done, it will look like one solid unit, with a nice louvred window in the centre. You could also place boards underneath the window to create a book case that completely frames the window. Create doors to the bottom shelves if desired, to protect or hide the contents from little hands.
