Fly Screens, like anything else we have with our home, has to be cleaned once in a while. If the fly screens are never cleaned they become ugly to look at, much like the exterior wall of a home, if it is never cleaned (sprayed with a pressure washer) it will develop obvious places of dirt, grim, mold, and dust. Cleaning fly screens are easier than you think, so go ahead, and schedule them for that spring cleaning day. When you are done, you will feel like you have brand new screens that look great.
If you have removable fly screens simply remove them for the cleaning. It helps if they can be set up outside, either propped up, leaned or even flat on a dry surface. Using the garden hose, gently spray the entire area of the screen. You do not want to use a pressure washer on the screen because it could pull at the edges and cause rips. Next, take a bucket of warm water, add soap (a regular hand-dish washing liquid will work just fine), and use a soft scrub brush to gently scrub the surface on both sides. After scrubbing, rinse thoroughly with the garden hose. Allow to air dry, or wipe with a large towel. Be sure to take a vacuum and vacuum the tracks to rid of all the dust and debris.
If spots on the screen become dirty before you are ready for a big cleaning, use soapy water, and a toothbrush, gently scrubbing the spot, then a spray bottle of water to rinse.
If the fly screen is fixed, you will need to prepare the areas by first protecting from water. Lay a drop cloth or big towels on the floor and the windowsill and door frame if necessary. Instead of rinsing with a garden hose, you will use a large spray bottle of water. Douse the screen with the water, then using a bucket of warm soapy water and a gentle scrub brush; clean the screens while they are in place. Spray to rinse afterward and either dry with a large towel and or place a fan to blow air for quicker air-drying. Run the vacuum hose around the edges.
Again, spot cleaning with a spray bottle and toothbrush is possible. Or for dust infested screens, put the upholstery attachment on the vacuum hose and gently run it over the screen surface to suck away all the dust and loose debris for a quick clean.
